‘The World Academy of Sciences’ for the advancement of science in developing countries or more commonly known as ‘TWAS’ was founded in 1983 with a belief that through knowledge and skill developing countries can address challenges such as hunger, disease and poverty by building strength in science and engineering,

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India has a strong mandate to foster Science and Technology (S &T) in developing countries through research collaborations and capacity building. With the aim to address societal challenges through application of S & T in emerging areas, DBT-TWAS Biotechnology fellowships have been jointly promoted since 2004 by DBT, New Delhi and TWAS, Trieste, Italy for scientists from developing countries other than India.

This fellowship programme is being managed by DBT-HRD Project Management Unit (DBT HRD PMU) established at Regional Centre for Biotechnology, Faridabad.
